Newcastle
Newcastle Upon Tyne, the capital of the North East of England, home to some 300,000 people, and lying on the North bank of the river Tyne. Formerly a great industrial city, like many cities in the UK its fortunes declined during in the latter half of the twentieth century with the fall in the manufacturing industry, and the closure of the mines in the north. Newcastle though has overcome these setbacks, and a programme of urban renewal and investment in new industries has once again placed Newcastle as one of the major economic and cultural centres in the UK.
Over the last ten years Newcastle's club scene has exploded, making it one of the the main cities in the UK for major club nights and is a favourite destination for big name DJs. The redevelopment of many areas of the city has seen many new pubs complimenting the older established public houses giving a wide choice in different venues for a night out.
The city is home to two major Universities, the University of Newcastle upon Tyne and the University of Northumbria. and so has a lively student population.
At last, shedding its image as a dreary industrial town, Newcastle is becoming known as a city of culture and as a favourite destination for a great night out, a reputation well deserved.
