McCabe's
McCabe's is an extremely popular pub in the town, attracting people from a wide age-range. Its prices are about normal for the town, and its bar meals are among the best I have ever tasted.
A large amount of Guinness memorabilia adorns the walls of the pub, which gives the pub a very quaint feel. The music is usually quite modern, but is usually kept to a reasonable level.
The bar staff are very friendly, and quite willing to have a laugh and a joke with you, assuming the pub isn't too frantic.
The popularity of the pub can have a downside, as this makes it extremely crowded, and it's not uncommon for glasses to steam up on entering the pub. Finding a seat on a Saturday night is usually quite an accomplishment, although the back area of the pub is usually far quieter than the bar area, and if you want a quiet drink and a chat on a Saturday night this is your best bet.
The quiz on a Tuesday night is not for the faint-hearted, because due to the varied age range of the pub the quiz questions are usually aimed at the older patrons of the pub. You can therefor expect questions reflecting this, so the pop-music questions are more likely to be about Max Bygraves than Robbie Williams.
McCabe's used to be my favourite pub in the town, and while it is still in the top five, over the last few years at the weekends the clientelle has changed, and not for the better. It's nowhere near as bad as Vikky's, but there seems to be more muppets coming in than there was a few years ago.
Overall, still a great pub, and well worth a visit, but is no longer the best pub in the town.
