Three Judges
For some bizarre reason the Three Judges (or, in local patter, 'the Judges')
has a reputation as a fighting man's pub. Well I can confirm it is a fighting
man's pub as long as the fighting is done inside the boxing ring. Being
conveniently situated opposite the bottom of Byres Road, big fight fans
would pop in for a pint on their way home from the Kelvin Hall. Hence why
it's called 'the Three Judges'.
This is a true Glasgow pub - no music, no TV, no clubbers, and hardly any
students. Plenty of chairs and tables so there's always the chance of a seat.
The clientele are just normal Glasgow punters (no West End Trendies here!)
and there are a few regulars who are always in. Spot the guy who looks like
Elvis! Most are in the 40 plus age group.
Now for the drink. As well as the normal selection of spirits and beer, the
Judges is a real ale pub. Usually there are ten on tap, varying in strength
from 3% to 7%. Prices are cheap, indeed it's the cheapest pint in the Byres
Road area. There are no promos and no cocktails!
All in all, the Judges is one of my favourite pubs. The perfect place to unwind
after work with a quiet pint.
