Bon Accord
Having been one of Glasgow’s most popular bars for over twenty years, the Bon Accord fell into a steady decline in the twilight years of the twentieth century, losing many of its regulars not to mention its reputation. In the last few years however, a new owner has seen the bar once again regain its position as Glasgow’s premier ale house.
The Bon Accord is one of the best pubs, not just in Glasgow, but also in Scotland. It is a real ale pub, where the beer quality is always excellent, with a variety of 10 ales on tap, along with the commercial beers too. There are new ales on almost every day, from all areas of Britain, new and old breweries alike.
The pub has a very friendly atmosphere, where everyone is made most welcome and the staff are always very pleasant and were always willing to help. When I was there, we had the opportunity to take a cellar tour, where, amongst other things, you find out about the major differences between real ale and commercial beers like Miller or Budweiser. Fantastic quality food is served throughout the day from a wide selection on the menu, and is good value for money to boot. (Another highlight is the funky glittery toilet seats, but don’t panic gentlemen, that’s only in the ladies!)
If you don’t want to take my word for it, the Bon Accord won the CAMRA Glasgow and West of Scotland Branch Pub of the Year in 2003 and has most recently been awarded the 2004 Licensed Traders Award for best Beer Pub. The Bon Accord is definitely worth a visit, regardless of whether you are an ale enthusiast, or just want a pint or a meal in a relaxing environment with your mates.
