Edinburgh
Edinburgh, although Scotland's capital is in fact the second largest city, coming after its traditional western adversary Glasgow, with which it has had a long standing rivalry.
Edinburgh is a stunning city, aided by it's historical buildings, most notably Edinburgh Castle, sitting in the middle of the city upon a volcanic plug. This gives it a natural defence on 3 sides and the Royal Mile running down from the Castle to Holyrood Palace, the Queen's residence when she visits Edinburgh, on the other side.
Rose Street, running parallel to Princes Street, is full of quaint, old fashioned pubs (as well as some more modern ones), and being fully pedestrianised gives an entire pub crawl in one street, although it is advisable to explore further as the entire city centre area is full of pubs offering everything from traditional Scottish pubs to Irish theme pubs and modern shiny colourful bars.
With the Parliament and High Court situated in Edinburgh as well as three universities Edinburgh, Heriot Watt and Napier Edinburgh's pubs range from the upmarket trendy bars aiming at the powerful and affluent (solicitors, judges) to those that aim towards the more financially challenged looking for as much drink as possible for the least amount of money (MSPs). It also caters for the vast number of tourists that visit the city each year with the traditional Scottish bars which ooze tartan and bagpipes, nice if it's done well, tacky if it isn't.
The city also has a name for being a great clubbing venue, and, like Glasgow has regular visits from such big names as Colours and Inside Out. The large population of young professionals and students means that these clubs will not run short of business, and Edinburgh remains one of the best venues for a night out anywhere in the UK.
