This bar is so up it’s own backside it’s unbelievable. We recently hired the “VIP area” for a work friend’s birthday party. They got a LOT of money off us that night. The staff were the rudest, most arrogant bunch that I’ve ever had the misfortune of meeting. Our whole group found problems with the 3 barmaids on duty (sorry chicks, you are NOT the “It girls” you think you are, you serve alcohol to punters. End of)

Anyway, I digress… These barmaids ignored everyone when they were having one of their conversations (of which there were many) and I even saw one of my friends being “shown the hand” (a la Jerry Springer) when all he’d done was politely ask to be served having waited over 5 minutes at an empty bar.

Another friend found herself being thrown out of the whole place when she took exception to the barmaids’ attitude. She insisted on speaking to the duty manager but was shocked to find that the “manager” believed the shrieking banshee of the barmaid over her and could not understand the slightest concept of customer service.

At 10.30 pm, members of the party who went to the loos (the VIP ones being out of action) found themselves barred by bouncers from re-entering. My husband was kept outside with no way of contacting anyone inside to explain what had happened.

Many requests to the General Manager for an apology over the appalling treatment that we received have fallen on deaf ears. He refuses to reprimand the idiots that work there so they’ll get away with it over and over again.

This bar loves itself and it’s past (ie so over!) reputation as one of Prince William’s haunts. Don’t go here unless you’re a Hooray Henry(etta), they are not interested in you or any semblance of customer service. We work for a VERY large, successful and wealthy employer and could bring a lot of business revenue their way if we chose. We won’t bother. The attitude of the staff and management in particular is downright disgusting. Get over yourselves, Opal Lounge. You’re pathetic.

Stylish & cool venue playing a nice house mix that was very easy on the ears, accompanied (when i was last there) by sax player and vocalist.
Turn up in the early evening for not-extortionate and delicious chinese/japanese food, then blag your way in free later by saying you ate there earlier.
Staff were friendly enough and cocktails were good. Yeah it's quite pricey but if you want to neck lagers all night, listening to Robbie Williams and fighting neds to get to the bar, go to a chain pub. Opal's a treat, not a local.

Having gone here out of curiosity more than anything else, I knew that I wasnt going to have the night of my life,anyway...

This place oozes class, similar to city as its trendy hip and modern. Its like a maze with all these extra rooms opening as the place gets busier. Decent sound system, no trouble. Pricey? hell yeah

Not really my cup of tea,but if your a posh/poser type this place will cater to your needs.

Well I loved it here, it was different and had a really buzzing vibe. Made loads of new friends, and didnt notice any of the class issue that seems to bother other reviewers. We did meet the 'public school' crowd and it didnt make a difference to how we viewed them, and we all enjoyed their company. You can see that it is a more refined club than others, and if you think its over priced and pretentious, then why continue to drink there. I have done and I will continue to recommend the 'Opal' as the number one place to drink to anyone who visits Edinburgh.

i have been once on a friday night and actually quite enjoyed it.

even if there was 2 extremely camp guys having a dance off (leave it to starsky&hutch/stifler guys) and a lack of girls for some strange reason. the girls that were here looked 17........

great mix of old and recent house music that kept me dancing (in a non dance off way) all night long

Why bother goin to a place where everyone thinks they're the dogs bollox just cos they're dumb enough to take out a loan for a single night out here. Yeh, George St's gettin classier, but surely it shouldn't be at the expense of the 'normal' locals - bams excluded of course...what else was Scrubway Cowgate designed for if not to store them all in outta harms way!

I love this place, ok so the drinks cost a fiver minimum, it is costly to get in (so its worth spending the whole night there...if you don't want to buy too many drinks that is!) and it does attract an eclectic group from 18 to 50 year olds but the music is great, there's loads of room to dance, to sit, to stand and look out for mr (miss) right or just admire the normally good looking bar men. I recommend go early and have dinner to avoid entrance fee and to enjoy the reasonably priced food! My regular yet expensive haunt now

Take it for what it is folks! It's a place for the bee's and the wanna-bee's to spend and enjoyable evening. It's the wanna-bee's that will put your nose out of joint by being an arse as thoes that are true bee's dont need to be an arse.

Full of professionals young and older with plenty of disposable to afford the price structure. Bar staff are slightly below par for what it aspires to be. Door-staff are excellent and keep the neds and chavetes out.

I would recomend spoiling yourself now and again by going there as it's pretty good. If you have the kind of job that can afford you to drink in there on a regular basis then it's a good place to drink. You will feel safe and will never be in danger of bitter wanna-bee's getting above their station.

After visiting this place recently on a Saturday night, I was shocked at how sh**e it really is. I'd heard mixed reviews but nothing could prepare me for the onslaught of wannabe yas mixed with mummy money and downright rudeness. I don't know how it can appeal to anyone. Who wants to be surrounded by people who's first question is 'how much do you earn?'

Classy? No. Pompus and trying-too-hard? Yes. It's a club that's trying desperately to give an air of being exclusive and failing at every turn.

Edinburgh just doesn't need a club that projects this image.

ps. Ever noticed people with money are nearly always pot ugly?
